Gentle Steps To Big Shifts: The Art of Integration

Change doesn't always arrive with a bold entrance. Sometimes it builds quietly, step by step, as we show up for ourselves day after day. Profound change happens when we choose to try, even when we are unsure of the outcome. And change is not about having all the answers. It is about making choices and trusting that you can figure it out along the way.

What Stones and Rivers Teaches Us About Transformation

I read Paulo Coelho after co-leading a beautiful psychedelic group experience. His story of Stones and Rivers, in his book Maktub, reminded me of the difficulty I witness in most psychedelic therapy clients, who do not know or understand that the path of transformation is not always bold and loud, and it is not a one and done. Transformation continues after our medicine journeys end.

Here is what Coelho writes: the traveler is walking along, listening to the music of the water. Suddenly, he notices a small grotto beneath one of the waterfalls. He studies the stone worn smooth by time, the beautiful shapes patiently created by nature. And written on a plaque, he sees these words by the Indian poet and philosopher Rabindranath Tagore, the first non-European and the first lyricist to win the Nobel Prize in Literature:

β€œIt wasn't the sculptor's hammer that shaped these stones so perfectly. It was the water, with its gentleness, its dance, and its song. Harshness destroys; gentleness shapes.”

Why Gentleness Shapes Lasting Change, Not Harshness

If we want big change, we need to try and be kind to ourselves. Change is a process. Being with ourselves gently, yet consistently, after our ketamine or psilocybin journeys is the key to beautiful and lasting behavior change and more mental quiet. This applies to talk therapy as well.

Rather than falling back into judgment and self-criticism when life challenges us, pause, take a breath, and choose softness. Every time we are able to take a breath, we can find the mental spaciousness to take a different, softer action despite self-doubt or judgment. And this reinforces new, positive beliefs that we are capable. True change comes through this quiet persistence to be with our mind and emotions, and through making small new choices along the way. Do not expect change to announce itself loudly or with force. It is not needed, not in therapy, and not in psychedelic work.

What Integration Really Means

This is the art of integration. I sometimes get the impression that integration is seen as putting the puzzle pieces from a journey together. As medicine facilitators, that is actually not what we do. Nobody knows the meaning of a journey better than the journeyer themselves.

What we do, or at least what I do, is help with the process Coelho describes above: helping clients stay soft and open, so the meaning of the journey can continue to unfold. I teach clients how to recognize spaciousness in the mind and nervous system after a journey, so they can continue seeing clearly. And what always happens, when clients do not allow their ego and mind to coax them back into collapse or shutdown, is that this gentle path of change and meaning unfolds.

Ketamine, Psilocybin, and the Tools of the Mind

If you are ready to make things happen in your life, ketamine and psilocybin can help beautifully, just like meditation can. All of these tools of the mind start with what you have and where you are. We are always ready to go after big goals. Whether you are working toward a personal milestone, more wellbeing, or healing from severe trauma, the path of change is always the same. It comes from showing up, not perfectly, but persistently, a theme we also explore in Get Unstuck with Ketamine.

You Don't Need to Be Fearless, Just Willing

You do not need to be fearless to work with psychedelics. You just need to be willing to learn about psychedelic therapy. Willing to try, willing to learn, and willing to believe that you are capable of more than you know. Willing to believe that you are not broken and that your path is not harder than anyone else's.

Many people who have suffered for many years believe that their work of healing is so much harder. Do not fall for that. It is just your mind holding you back. Breathing, and learning how to understand our minds so we can make different choices, is the same for everyone. We all need to remember and reconnect with who we are, to more gentleness and self-love, a journey we write about in Psychedelics: Remembering Myself.

We have all built walls throughout our lives, and unfortunately nobody teaches us how to stay innocent and childlike in school or at work. So we are all setting out on the same path. The road may not always be smooth, but growth rarely is. Growing pains, you have heard of those? What matters most is that you keep going, keep learning, and keep believing in an authentic version of yourself that is already there, always waiting.
